EPURON inaugurates two thin-film solar parks in Bavaria

  • Six megawatts (MW) of total output – enough capacity to supply about 1,700 households
  • EPURON develops more photovoltaic plants in southern Germany
  • Bavarian town receptive to environmentally friendly power and support expansion of photovoltaic systems

Hamburg, 27 September 2007: EPURON GmbH inaugurated two thin-film solar parks today in Kissing (2.4 MW) and Münster (3.6 MW) near Augsburg, Germany. The large-scale systems officially began operation in front of local business and political leaders and other interested residents from the community.

Both photovoltaic plants were designed in cooperation with IBE GmbH, a local project development company.Construction was carried out by EPURON´s sister company SunTechnics. Partial orders were handed to four regional companies. It took only three months for a team of 50 builders to complete the construction of the solar parks. Around 89,000 modules were used in an area of more than 170,000 square metres. This roughly corresponds to the size of 22 football fields. More than 1,700 four-family households – nearly half of the population of Kissing and Münster - will be supplied with clean electricity from the sun. Approximately six million kilowatt hours of power will be produced annually. This is a yearly savings of around 4,500 tons of carbon dioxide - the damaging greenhouse gas that has been effecting global climate change.

“We have already implemented numerous large-scale projects in Bavaria. As a result, we discovered that local communities and authorities have been very receptive to the idea of renewable energy and are supportive in approving such projects. From the start, the feedback on our proposal was also positive in Kissing and Münster,” reported Christoph Schmitt, manager of photovoltaic project development at EPURON.

“We are proud that a photovoltaic plant producing this sort of output was installed in our community. During times of climate change, every community should try to do its part in protecting the environment. By installing this system, we are making it clear that we are on board,” stated Alois Stuber, Mayor of Münster.

The mayor of Kissing, Manfred Wolf, added: “When EPURON first presented this project to us, we immediately saw how it would benefit our community and the environment. Our local economy has boosted from the profits made during the construction of the two plants.”

With the completion of these two projects, Epuron has a total peak output of around ten megawatts of thin-film technology in Bavaria. EPURON is constructing additional projects this year which will raise the total volume of thin-film solar parks up to 20 megawatts. EPURON has also constructed crystalline photovoltaic plants in southern Germany on free-fields and roof tops which produce a total output of around 30 megawatts.
